Boston-based Northeastern University has announced the launch of an online masters program in information security, which will prepare its students to ensure the safety and confidentiality of valuable data - a primary concern of many large corporations. The program, which is slated to begin in January, will give students the option to complete their coursework entirely online, on campus or using a mix of the two methods.
Curriculum will incorporate technology training and other relevant courses, including those in the social sciences, law, criminology and management.
This coursework is intended to ensure graduates "possess not only the technical knowledge, but also the skills to make the most strategic decisions when dealing with security issues" so they understand "how information security risks are assessed and managed," said Themis Papageorge, the program's director.
Several wholly online universities offer similar accredited advanced degree programs that can prepare students for careers in information security. Capella University, for example, offers masters of science degrees in information technology business analysis and general information technology. Western Governors University offers a MBA in information technology management, which - according to the BLS - is the preferred certification of IT employers.
As technology becomes further integrated into the daily lives of our society, the demand for professionals specialized in the management and operation of such technology will continue to rise and prosper. Taking advantage of a college degree program or online university to get an associates degree and further your employment prospects in these fields is a great way to get a leg up on the competition.
